St Oswald’s has a rich musical history. John Bacchus Dykes, the hymn-writer, was vicar here from 1862 until his death in 1876; his most well-known tunes include Melita (“Eternal Father, strong to save”), Dominus Regit Me (“The King of Love my Shepherd is”), and Nicaea (“Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty”). The strong musical tradition that he encouraged continues today, playing a vital role in the life and worship of the Parish community.
